GST on Mobile Phones and Electronics in India: How iPhones, Android Phones, and Imported Devices Are Taxed

Mobile phones are among the most heavily searched consumer electronics categories in India, and GST plays a major role in determining their final retail price. Whether purchasing an iPhone, Android smartphone, or imported device, taxation directly affects the final cost.

GST Rate on Mobile Phones - 18% (HSN 8517): This applies to smartphones, feature phones, and cellular communication devices. At the retail level, GST is already included within the MRP displayed to consumers.

How GST Is Calculated: For a smartphone with a taxable value of Rs. 50,000, 18% GST amounts to Rs. 9,000, making the final invoice value Rs. 59,000.

GST on iPhones: While iPhones attract the same 18% GST, additional factors like customs duty, import costs, supply chain expenses, and currency fluctuations make them appear more expensive in India.

Imported vs India-Assembled Phones: The GST rate remains 18% regardless of origin. However, imported devices attract customs duties and import levies before GST, while India-assembled phones may benefit from production-linked incentives.

Customs Duty on Imported Mobile Phones: Imported smartphones attract customs duty, social welfare surcharge, and IGST before reaching the retail market, significantly affecting pricing.

GST on Accessories: Chargers, cases, earphones, smartwatches, screen protectors, and power banks generally attract 18% GST. Businesses should ensure correct HSN mapping for each category.

GST on Refurbished and Second-Hand Phones: These may operate under special valuation principles such as the margin scheme, where GST applies on the margin portion instead of full transaction value.

Input Tax Credit for Businesses: Businesses purchasing phones for operations, employee usage, or resale may be eligible for ITC subject to GST provisions and business usage conditions.

GST on Mobile Repair: Mobile repair and servicing generally attract 18% GST on repair labour, spare parts, replacement components, and diagnostic services.

Ecommerce and GST on Phone Sales: Online electronics retailers must maintain GST registration, invoice compliance, return reconciliation, and marketplace reporting accuracy.
